Humidity Control in the Aerospace Industry

Find your Condair Expert

Benefits

The production process in the aviation industry is heavily dependent on sufficient humidity between 40% and 60%. Humidity that is too low or too high can cause damage and faults in electronic aircraft components, provide an inadequate environment for the polymerisation of composite materials, sealants, coatings, and welds, and compromise safety in your facility and in the air. Ensuring adequate air humidification in your production facility increases your throughput, improves product quality, and extends the service life of aircraft.

Prevention of electrostatic discharge (ESD)

A relative humidity between 40% and 60% reduces the risk of dangerous electrical discharges and electronic failures in avionics and electronic systems.

Avoiding desoldering of fragile components

The right humidity contributes to the efficiency of wave soldering and surface mount technology (SMT) in aircraft construction.

Painting and coating in the aviation industry

Ensuring sufficient and constant humidity between 40% and 60% is essential for successful painting and coating applications.

Humidity control in the aerospace industry

Ensuring high-quality manufacturing of avionics and electrical components

A constant humidity level of 40% to 60% during the manufacture of avionics components is essential for product quality assurance, reliability, and safety. Adequate humidity helps eliminate the risk of ESD and reduces the likelihood of costly electronic malfunctions, improves the safety of the aircraft and flight system, and ensures that flight schedules and delivery dates are met.

Humidity control for the application of paints and coatings in the aviation industry

The painting of aircraft requires reduced and strict stable conditions in order to achieve an even coating. Maintaining humidity between 40% and 60% is ideal for paint adhesion.

Avoiding desoldering and fragile components

The right humidity contributes to the efficiency of the wave soldering process and surface mount technology (SMT) in aircraft construction. Without sufficient humidity, the solder paste can dry out, preventing the solder joints from becoming sufficiently strong and causing the product to have weak points. This can shorten the service life of aircraft and lead to short circuits and malfunctions. Too low humidity can also cause aircraft electronics to become sensitive, components to break, or damage or malfunctions to occur in the air.

Frequentis AG, Wien

Kennedy Space-Center, Cape Canaveral

The John F. Kennedy Space Center is NASA's space station on Merritt Island in Florida. All manned space flights of the United States were launched from December 1968 until July 2011 &mdash first the Apollo missions and from 1981 until 2011 the space shuttles, some of which also returned. The total area of the Kennedy Space Center comprises almost 570 square kilometers, in which 17,000 people work. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to the KSC Visitor Complex every year. Since June 2013, the space shuttle Atlantis has tallied among the highlights of the visitor center that can be admired as a museum piece.Condair's RS steam humidifier ensures optimal indoor humidity.

Air Traffic Services Centre, Melbourne

The Air Traffic Services Centre (ATSC) in Melbourne is one of two major air traffic centres in Australia. This centre manages the airspace in southern Australia across to Indonesia and even the South Pole. This critical site is open 24/7, 365 days per year. It requires an optimal environment for staff to remain healthy and comfortable, as well as maintaining conditions for the advanced equipment to run effectively. Resistive steam humidification systems were installed to ensure that humidity levels are maintained all-year-round.

Capital Airport, Beijing

Measured by passenger volume of roughly 84 million passengers annually, the Beijing Capital Airport is the second biggest airport in the world. The massive steel and glass construction at Terminal 3 was designed by Sir Norman Foster. It covers an area of 1.3 million m2, making it the biggest building in the world. The architecture of the airport tries to combine elements of traditional Chinese architecture with modern ones. The bright red columns and the dull golden roof are meant to evoke the imperial palaces and temples of Beijing. Triangular skylights allow the terminal to appear bright and airy and optimal humidity is maintained by the hybrid humidifiers by Condair.

TERMA

Terma saves 150,000 kWh annually Terma is an international manufacturer of high-tech equipment for customers within the aviation, defence, space and monitoring system industries. Condair's humidification solution provides free evaporative cooling while offering Terma considerable energy savings. Broad product range meets strict requirements Terma requires excellent air quality and accurate humidity control in its production areas, which e.g.involves protection against electrostatic discharge that may potentially interfere with processes and damage electronic components. Energy savings through evaporative coolingAnother focus area for Terma is the company's energy consumption. Terma has opted for a humidification solution with evaporative cooling for direct room humidification &ndash the absolutely least expensive alternative compared with other humidification systems. Wherever possible in the production areas, Terma is gradually switching to Condair's evaporative cooling and humidification solutions, which has contributed to considerable energy savings. In less urgent areas, or where previously chosen ventilation solutions exist, Terma continues to use Condair's steam humidifiers, which represent the appropriate solution for these particular purposes. Advantages &bull Saves more than 150,000 kWh annually&bull Reduces electrostatic discharges (ESD)&bull Utilises free evaporative cooling&bull Ensures compliance with product tolerances&bull Increases employee well-being System specifications &bull Pumps: MLP 300 with RO&bull Modules: 7 x Princess 2&bull Capacity: 250 l/h&bull Installed: 2013 "An energy seminar at Condair opened our eyes to new opportunities of reducing our energy consumption through evaporative cooling. At the same time, our indoor climate is now considerably better, which of course is popular with the employees." Terma Facilities, Gert Jørgensen

Munich Airport

Munich Airport, also named Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport, is an international airport serving Munich and Upper Bavaria. It is the second-busiest airport in Germany in terms of passenger traffic after Frankfurt Airport, and the ninth-busiest airport in Europe, handling 47.9 million passengers in 2019. The Condair DL hybrid humidifier, from Condair, is the preferred product to maintain the ideal humidity. This adiabatic humidifier provides very accurate humidity control at ±2%RH, whilst offering exceptional hygiene management, with a combination of reverse osmosis water filtration, flush and drain cycles and a patented Hygiene Plus silver ionisation system.
