The Smithsonian Institution: Preserving America’s heritage with optimal indoor climate

The Smithsonian Institution is arguably the most important research and educational institution in the United States. It operates numerous museums, galleries, zoological gardens and scientific projects. The institution's headquarters is the building known as ‘The Castle’ on Jefferson Drive in Washington.

The imposing red sandstone building was constructed in 1855 in the Norman style, which represents a mixture of late Romanesque and early Gothic architecture typical of 19th-century America. The building houses the entire administration as well as a visitor centre with digital maps and interactive displays that answer questions.
