Life-sustaining water: Requirements for hygienic air humidification

We regard water as a foodstuff and treat it as such – responsibly! From our many years of experience, we know that any air humidification system can only be as reliable and hygienic as the water used and the service and maintenance concept behind it.

Water treatment

Even though it may appear clear and pure and is used without restriction as drinking water, untreated water is in many cases unsuitable for air humidification. The reasons for this lie in the large number of substances present in the water: bacteria, germs, algae, sand, suspended solids, salts and other minerals can pose significant risks to human health and the functionality of machinery. For this reason, the comprehensive DRAABE water treatment system uses a multi-stage process to provide optimised pure water that meets all requirements for trouble-free operation and the highest standards of health protection.

Multi-stage water treatment using the example of DRAABE in-room air humidification:

Water softening

The water treatment process begins with water softening. In this process, the water constituents primarily responsible for limescale formation (limescale dust) – calcium and magnesium – are replaced by easily soluble sodium salts

Filtration

Here, the treated soft water is purified via a two-stage mechanical filtration process. An activated carbon filter binds chlorine compounds, organic contaminants, pesticide residues and other chemical compounds. Suspended solids and impurities such as dirt, rust and sand particles larger than five thousandths of a millimetre are retained by the microfilter.

Reverse osmosis

The softened and filtered water then flows into the heart of the DRAABE water treatment system – the DRAABE PerPur pure water system. The DRAABE PerPur pure water system produces almost completely desalinated and germ-free pure water using high-quality membrane separation technology. Desalination takes place according to the principle of reverse osmosis: the saline water is forced through a semi-permeable spiral-wound membrane by a pump. Minerals and organic residues, such as fungi and bacteria, are retained, concentrate in the inlet chamber and are discharged into the sewage system as a concentrate. With a residual salt content of 2–3%, the purified water produced is optimally prepared for air humidification.

UVC-C irradiation

If a DRAABE high-pressure nozzle system is used, the purified water is now fed into the DRAABE HighPur high-pressure system. A special bioreactor ensures, via additional UV-C irradiation with monitored effectiveness, that even the last remaining residual germs in the inlet water are killed. The purified water, now perfectly treated for air humidification, is atomised without dripping, without lime dust and free from bacteria and germs.

Service and Maintenance Concept Only through regular maintenance and disinfection can the full performance and hygiene of the air humidification system be maintained. All DRAABE air humidification and water treatment systems therefore share a common design principle: the units can be dismantled and replaced in a matter of seconds and sent to the laboratory workshop for professional maintenance. The DRAABE PUR systems are housed in portable small containers, which are connected to the pipework network via flexible quick-connect couplings. The systems can be detached from the wall bracket in just a few simple steps. As part of the full-service rental package, customers renting DRAABE systems automatically receive a fully serviced and disinfected replacement unit every 6 months. The used unit is conveniently returned to the laboratory workshop for maintenance. This ensures that the air humidification system is always reliable and hygienically sound.
